Moderna, known for its COVID-19 vaccine, announced positive phase 3 results for its personalized melanoma mRNA vaccine developed with Merck. Researchers sequenced each patient's tumor mutations and manufactured an individualized vaccine teaching the immune system to target the cancer cells. Combined with Keytruda (pembrolizumab), the vaccine kept patients cancer-free longer than Keytruda alone and improved distant metastasis-free survival—pointing to AI-driven personalized mRNA vaccines as a possible future of cancer treatment.
