OpenAI Data Reveals 8-Fold Usage Gap Between AI Power Users and Normies
AccBalanced · x · 2026-08-24
The gap between AI power users and casual users is significant and widening. As those skilled with agents build systems that compound and iterate over time, this divergence affects both consumers and enterprises.
Recent data from OpenAI quantifies this divide:
- Cross-Industry: There is an 8-fold gap in token output between typical firms and the top decile, with the latter increasing output by over 17x since April 2025.
- Tech Sector: The gap is even wider in the Information (tech) industry, reaching nearly 12-fold, where the top decile is outputting 32.5x as many tokens as they were just over a year ago.
