HuggingFace explores sale at up to $13B valuation after rejecting Nvidia

HuggingFace, the world's largest open-source AI model platform, is exploring a full sale and has hired bankers to field offers at a valuation potentially reaching $13 billion — nearly triple its 2023 Series D valuation of $4.5B and almost double the $7B implied when it rejected Nvidia's $500M investment less than a year ago.

The piece traces HuggingFace's arc from a failed teen chatbot to the default infrastructure for open-source AI, now hosting 2M+ models. CEO Clément Delangue said earlier this year the company is profitable.

The core tension: giants like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and Nvidia can afford it, but the platform's value rests on neutrality — acquisition by one would likely drive rivals off it. A plausible path is an outside buyer, like Stripe's $7.5B acquisition of OpenRouter. Amid an AI infra M&A wave (Cursor's parent taken out at $60B by SpaceX), the deal, if it happens, would set the key pricing benchmark for AI infrastructure.
