Etched Raises $1B Led by Jane Street to Validate Architecture-Agnostic AI Chips
TheTuringPost · x · 2026-08-24
AI chip startup Etched raised $1 billion in 26 days, with its valuation jumping from $10.3 billion to $21 billion. High-frequency trading firm Jane Street led the $700 million round after testing the hardware and installing the first rack.
Etched originally built Sohu, a Transformer-only chip that sacrificed flexibility for speed and efficiency. The company now claims its system is "architecture-agnostic," supporting models like Llama, DeepSeek, Qwen, and Mamba. Jane Street, which operates tens of thousands of GPUs and builds custom compilers, serves as an ideal validation partner. If Etched maintains specialization efficiency while avoiding rigidity, it may have found the next major hardware paradigm after GPUs.
