Scholar uses AI-hallucinated citations, blames Google Scholar search results

A Korean studies scholar included six non-existent citations in a recent paper. In a statement, the scholar explained finding them via a Google Scholar search where they appeared legitimate with real authors and abstracts. While unconfirmed, the scholar suspects they were AI-generated citations that surfaced in search results. The scholar admitted failing to verify sources independently. The journal confirmed the analysis was reproducible and found insufficient evidence of AI-authored text, deciding not to retract.
