Fable 5 Makes Up Only 6% of Anthropic Sales
rohanpaul_ai · x · 2026-08-24
FT data reveals Fable 5 accounts for only 6% of Anthropic's token purchases. Priced at double Opus 5's rate, businesses are matching model strength to task difficulty, reserving frontier capabilities for high-value uses.
While weak flagship demand doesn't automatically imply poor economics—smaller models can yield higher gross margins if compute costs drop faster—the forced June withdrawal of Fable 5 may have damaged its pricing power. Companies forced to qualify alternatives have already paid the switching costs, making them more comfortable with multi-vendor strategies.
Furthermore, Anthropic faces internal competition. Opus 5 costs half of Fable 5's standard rate yet approaches Fable-level intelligence. Benchmarks show max-effort Opus 5 trailed Fable 5 by just 0.5% on CursorBench 3.2 at half the cost, potentially shortening the commercial lifespan of flagship models.
