The author draws a parallel between the release of Fable and the end of Moore's Law. Previously, rapid model improvements meant developers didn't need to ruthlessly optimize code or context strategies, relying on new models like Opus to solve problems.
Fable's arrival, despite its incredible capabilities, came with high costs. This forced the industry to rethink task allocation: determining what work goes to expensive models versus cheaper alternatives (like 5.6, K3, GLM). This shift towards workflow stratification is unlikely to reverse; even if Fable-class prices drop, competitors will close the gap, and companies have recognized the value of their traces.
