Japanese Team Creates Female Clones from Male Mouse Cells Using CRISPR

Scientists in Japan have created fertile female clones from male mouse cells for the first time using a controlled chromosome-engineering approach.
- Technique: Researchers used a CRISPR-based method called “Y-CUT” to eliminate the Y chromosome from cloned male embryos, changing the configuration from XY to XO, allowing them to develop as female mice.
- Methodology: This was combined with somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), enabling the generation of both male and female mice from a single male genome source.
- Outcome: The resulting female clones were fertile, and researchers successfully obtained the next generation by breeding them.
This approach is called “dual-sex cloning” and holds potential for conservation biology.
