Software engineering is undergoing a major shift from 'augmentation' (copilots suggesting the next line of code) to 'delegation' (agents). Current AI agents can plan features, write code, test, open PRs, and monitor production with minimal human intervention. This shift necessitates building context pipelines to provide agents with accurate, current knowledge, as reasoning on stale context is worse than no automation. It also requires new governance mechanisms and a rethinking of the traditional SDLC designed around sprints and human review.
