Open Source AI Token Share on Vercel Surges to 62%
GavinSBaker · x · 2026-08-23
Data from Vercel reveals a significant shift in AI usage over the last two months: open-source AI has increased its token share from 28% to 62%, taking share from OpenAI and Anthropic. This growth is particularly impressive as it occurred alongside an acceleration in token usage from frontier models, suggesting that overall AI infrastructure demand is outpacing the growth of the top providers. The analysis indicates that while open-source inference compresses margins at the model layer, it does not reduce compute costs per token, thus driving infrastructure demand. The projected end state suggests that closed, frontier tokens will capture 60-90% of economic value while comprising only 15-25% of total tokens.
