Anthropic and OpenAI Build Dedicated Teams for Enterprise Customization
sanjaykalra · x · 2026-08-23
Anthropic's joint venture "Ode" with Blackstone and others operates about 100 engineers, while OpenAI has assembled roughly 150 more via acquisition. Together, 250 engineers are targeting thousands of sponsor-backed portfolio companies.
Key observations:
- Arithmetic decides who gets served: A pod of six senior engineers on 45-day cycles only clears costs against very large contracts, sending these teams to marquee logos first.
- Watch for vendor preference: Your sponsor holds equity in the entity deploying the AI. This legitimate structure creates a vendor preference you didn't bid for. Get ownership of evals and workflow specs in writing before the pilot.
- 20% adoption gap: Only about 20% of portfolio companies have a GenAI use case in production. Keep the model rentable and the workflow layer under your own roof to minimize switching costs.
