OpenAI Acquires Instant's Entire Team to Add a Memory Layer for Agents
新智元 · wechat · 2026-08-23
Instant, a YC S22 startup, announced its whole team is joining OpenAI, with its cloud hosting service running until August 31. Known as the "Firebase of the AI era," Instant provides one-stop backend infrastructure for AI agents — databases, auth, real-time sync, and offline caching. It raised a $3.4M seed in 2024 backed by YC, SV Angel, and angels including Paul Graham, Greg Brockman, and Jeff Dean.
The platform serves 17,000+ developers, hosts 400,000+ apps, has processed 2.5 billion transactions, and just crossed 10,000 GitHub stars. OpenAI's goal is to fill a critical agent gap: persistent state management and real-time data consistency — even the smartest LLM can't resolve concurrent read/write conflicts, which is exactly the CRDT-based sync and offline-first work Instant has done for four years.
The article notes OpenAI's 2026 M&A count already nears all of last year, with none being model companies — all developer infrastructure — signaling a pivot from "model company" to "platform company" building an Apple-like ecosystem moat.
