MIT's new AI model SparksMatter discovers non-toxic, earth-abundant thermoelectric material

MIT Prof. Buehler's team introduced the SparksMatter AI model, which identified CaMg₂Si₂, a new thermoelectric material made from stable, non-toxic, earth-abundant elements. Thermoelectrics convert waste heat into electricity without moving parts. Current top materials rely on scarce/toxic elements like tellurium or lead, making this discovery significant. While model capabilities and architectures have advanced, solving synthesis and manufacturability remains a key challenge.
