OpenAI Lets MCP Plugins Ship 'Skills' — Instruction Guides Baked Into ChatGPT/Codex
dfinke · x · 2026-08-22
Per OpenAI's developer docs, MCP plugins can now ship skills — bundled instruction guides, not just tools. Key details:
- Skills are baked into ChatGPT/Codex at submission time, not fetched live;
- Analogy: a recipe card, not just ingredients;
- Skills are snapshots with no live updates;
- Capped at 5 skills per plugin;
- Based on a still-unofficial MCP proposal.
