Harari: AI will take over the financial system
AryHHAry · x · 2026-08-22
Yuval Noah Harari told The Economist that AI will take over the financial system, and humans may no longer understand what causes a financial crash in the future.
Modern financial systems shifted to algorithms long ago. The Flash Crash of May 6, 2010, serves as a real example where one automated selling program triggered a rapid index plunge and rebound. Reports and studies indicate that high-frequency traders accelerated the crash by dumping positions rather than stabilizing the market.
With AI now being more advanced, a 2025 paper in the Journal of Financial Stability models how AI reinforces three old vulnerabilities: leverage, liquidity stress, and opacity. The combination of speed, identical data, and complementary strategies poses new risks.
