EU AI Act transparency rules now in force: AI content must be labeled, chatbots must disclose
emmanuelvivier · x · 2026-08-22
As of August 2, 2026, the EU AI Act's transparency obligations take effect:
- Marking AI-generated content: Deepfake images, audio and video, emotion recognition and biometric categorization tools, and public-interest text without human editorial review must be clearly labeled with machine-readable marks (the EU has published a set of icons for this).
- Disclosing AI interaction: Users must be clearly informed when they are interacting with an AI system rather than a human, e.g. chatbots, AI agents and avatars.
The Commission says the rules aim to help people recognize AI content and protect against misinformation, fraud and impersonation, and has issued guidelines to help providers and deployers comply.
