Anthropic builds in-house chip team, hiring ex-Google TPU veteran Amir Salek
机器之心 · wechat · 2026-08-22
Anthropic is forming an internal chip team and has hired Amir Salek, former Google TPU core lead who drove the first seven TPU generations from 2013 to 2022, reporting to compute platform head James Bradbury, per Bloomberg. Salek previously spent eight years at Nvidia helping build its SoC business.
Anthropic currently buys Nvidia GPUs, Google TPUs and AWS chips, and may spend roughly $19B on compute in 2026. Custom silicon would let it optimize for its own models, boost inference efficiency and cut long-term costs — mirroring OpenAI's Broadcom-backed Jalapeño inference chip. Chip development is slow and costly, so a multi-supplier approach continues in the near term. The article argues AI competition is shifting from model capability to full-stack compute infrastructure.
