Google's Pandora's Router Optimizes AI Model Selection via Cost-Benefit Analysis
burkov · x · 2026-08-22
Google DeepMind proposes "Pandora’s Router," a method to address the computational cost of selecting between various AI models or tools.
The research frames the selection process as a sequential decision problem: it starts with cheap, uncertain predictions of each option's performance and calculates whether a more accurate assessment would improve the decision enough to justify its price. The method adapts the classic economic model "Pandora’s Box"—where inspecting an option costs money before its value is known—into a practical routing policy, utilizing simple formulas under a bell-shaped model of prediction uncertainty.
Tests on mathematical reasoning, retrieval-based question answering, and selection among more than 100 language models demonstrate that it approaches the quality of evaluating every option while significantly reducing computational costs.
