Toucan proposes a compute strategy for AI-focused VCs: those raising funds now should target 1.5-2x their intended amount and spend the surplus on reserved compute facilities for their portfolio companies. Since AI startups spend most capital on compute, VCs can benefit from economies of scale (pricing power, access to scarce resources). If a lead VC cannot secure compute, they function merely as a co-investor.
