Terence Tao warns AI shifts scarcity in math

gerardsans · x · 2026-08-22

Terence Tao published a new essay "Mathematics in the Age of AI" exploring the deep impact of AI on the discipline. The core message: while AI makes generating correct proofs cheaper and faster, it creates a deeper problem. Mathematicians cannot possibly read, understand, verify, and teach thousands of new results. The scarce resource shifts from finding proofs to making sense of them. The same shift is visible in software, where "vibe coding" is flooding codebases with exponentially more lines of code.
