OpenAI Slows Some Advanced Training Runs to Accelerate Safety Work
pstAsiatech · x · 2026-08-22
Chris Lehane, OpenAI's Chief Global Affairs Officer, stated that as AI capabilities accelerate, standards must rise accordingly.
To address the potential power of future models—particularly in cybersecurity—OpenAI is taking the following steps:
- Slowing Scaling: Pausing the scaling of some of their most advanced training runs to prioritize safeguard development.
- Pausing RL: Implemented a two-week pause in reinforcement learning for models intended for release. The largest planned training run remains on hold while smaller-scale training and testing continue.
- Strengthening Safeguards: Expanding monitoring to detect concerning behavior, applying safeguards earlier in the training pipeline, and securing development environments.
Additionally, OpenAI previewed "Private Safety Processing," a new approach to identify patterns of serious abuse while meeting strict privacy requirements.
