Google Open-Sources DESIGN.md: A Design Contract Format for Coding Agents
bibryam · x · 2026-08-22
Google Labs open-sourced DESIGN.md (27k+ stars on GitHub), a format spec for describing a visual identity to coding agents. It combines machine-readable design tokens (YAML front matter) with human-readable design rationale (Markdown prose): tokens give agents exact values, prose explains why those values exist and how to apply them—creating a reusable design contract that keeps agent-generated UI coherent across sessions. The format is early but tackles the real problem of style drift in agent-built interfaces.
