Andrew Ng details the AI Engineering Skills Map: six core skills for building AI apps
DeepLearningAI · x · 2026-08-21
DeepLearning.AI published the second installment of Andrew Ng's AI Engineering Skills Map, fleshing out six skills for building and deploying AI applications:
- LLM foundations
- Grounding models with data
- Building agentic systems
- Evaluation-driven development
- Operating in production
- Machine learning foundations
Ng argues the key difference from traditional software is unpredictable output, making AI engineering highly iterative: skilled engineers repeatedly decide what to try next based on intermediate results, building reliable systems on unreliable AI components. The map is based on analyses of job postings, expert interviews, and surveys.
