Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations plunged 95% in two weeks as site: searches spiked

Third-party tracking shows Reddit held a steady 4.4–4.6% of all ChatGPT citations, then dropped in two clean steps: Aug 8 from 4.6% to 3%, Aug 14 from 3.2% to 0.55% in a single day, and 0.23% by Aug 21 — a 95% drop in two weeks with no announcement or obvious cause on Reddit's side.
In the same window, the share of ChatGPT background searches carrying a site: parameter jumped from under 0.11% weekly to 26.2% in the week of Aug 10. A site: query means ChatGPT isn't searching the open web — it picks a domain first and restricts results to it. The author speculates this may signal OpenAI building its own cache index; full breakdown in the linked post.
