Open vs. closed model gap closes; GLM-5.3 scores 60

Discussion on the shrinking gap between open and closed models and the performance of GLM-5.3:
- Silent Adoption: Chinese open models have permeated mainstream tools (e.g., Cursor Composer uses one, Airbnb uses Qwen, GLM is buried in half the coding tools). No announcements needed; it just happened once self-hosting became viable.
- Performance: Artificial Analysis added GLM-5.3, scoring 60. It has 1/4 the parameters of Kimi K3 (also scoring 60), while the top closed model scores 63. In agentic capabilities, it ranked 2nd overall, behind only Opus 5, significantly outperforming the previous open leader.
- Local Value: Benchmarks are controlled and tell little about messy personal codebases. The real value is running on your own machine for side projects/internal scripts. While the author avoids client data, others are using no-retention hosts for real work.
- Trade-offs: GLM-5.3 uses 20% more tokens than 5.2 (losing its "lightweight" edge), hallucinates slightly more, and knows less than Kimi K3. Gains come from training, not size.
Viewpoint: The capability gap that justified paying for closed models is mostly gone. Whether the model's origin matters once it runs locally is an open question.
