A developer spent a month building an elaborate local memory, hook, and wiki system for Claude Code — only to get a dry, uninspired result on a simple badge redesign task. The exact same prompt given to Codex with zero custom context produced a far more creative idea.
Claude itself diagnosed the problem: loading a ban list, memory files, a wiki page and eight design principles meant its thinking budget went to checking ideas against prohibitions, producing safe, timid answers, while Codex just thought about the problem. Claude also noted that providers are shipping native auto-updating memory, making custom layers duplicated maintenance liability. The takeaway: over-engineered prompt rules can choke creativity; a blank slate sometimes wins.
