Brainless Slime Mold Recreated Tokyo's Rail Network in 26 Hours

A classic experiment from Toshiyuki Nakagaki's lab at Hokkaido University placed Physarum polycephalum, a single giant cell, on a surface mapped to Tokyo's geography, with oat flakes at the locations of 36 surrounding cities.

The mold first spread in every direction, exploring all paths simultaneously. Once it found the food, it pruned unproductive tendrils and thickened the tubes carrying nutrients efficiently. In 26 hours it converged on a sparse network connecting all 36 cities—nearly identical to the actual Tokyo rail system in routes, redundancy, and efficiency-resilience tradeoffs.

The takeaway: the mold had no map, no blueprint, no concept of a rail network. It only optimized one thing—moving nutrients with minimal biological material. That single local pressure produced a global solution matching a century of human engineering, suggesting many solutions we attribute to intelligence may only require the right constraints applied over time.
