Stripe to acquire OpenRouter after 30,000x token growth to 4.5 quadrillion tokens a year

OpenRouter has agreed to be acquired by Stripe, just three years after launching in 2023, per Menlo Ventures investors Matt Murphy and Deedy Das.
OpenRouter started with only four models (GPT-3.5, GPT-4, Together's GPT NeoXT, Cohere xlarge), betting that AI usage would be massive and users would want choice across models. Token usage has since grown 30,000x to a 4.5+ quadrillion-token annual run rate, with monthly growth averaging 33% and over 500 models supported.
Founded by former OpenSea founder Alex Atallah with Chris Clark and Louis Vichy, the fully remote team rarely publicized revenue or fundraising. Menlo backed it from seed (via the Anthropic-partnered Anthology Fund) through Series A and B. As a two-sided market, Meta, xAI and Chinese model teams launched models on OpenRouter first, OpenAI tested secret models there with exclusive discounts, and Karpathy called it "the switch for AI." The real moat wasn't technical difficulty, but becoming the market's default infrastructure first.
