Poolside lands $12B reverse-execuhire with NVIDIA: 109 employees join, founders stay and pivot

Poolside × NVIDIA: the first reverse-execuhire

NVIDIA went from investor to licensing Poolside's Model Factory and hiring 109 employees — the overwhelming majority of its technical staff — in a deal worth roughly $12B, with founders staying behind ($1B) while employees leave ($6B). Unlike typical execuhires where executives leave and the company remains, here the employees exited and the founders pivot the company somewhere new.

Poolside revealed it had a 6-week window to raise $2B for a 40,000 GB300 cluster coming online in January and lost the cluster after missing it. They believe 10-20k GB300s could rival today's frontier, but next year's frontier needs an order of magnitude more — constrained by data center space and contracted compute, not just capital. Hints at what's next: the PIC infraco spun out in Jan 2026 aims to scale to 7GW, and the thesis that human-level intelligence will be commoditized by open source while AI's ultimate value lies in scientific discovery powered by real-world experimental data moats.
