Defining Multi-Agent Environments: Orchestration vs. Swarms vs. Simulations
sebkrier · x · 2026-08-21
Clarifies three definitions of multi-agent environments:
- Subagent Orchestration: The popular approach (e.g., Claude Code/Codex) where models are incentivized to orchestrate post-training tasks. Likely the cause of Claude's illegibility since Opus 4.6.
- Swarms: The "1000 agents working together" concept seen on TikTok. Still preliminary with no strong signal of superiority over existing harnesses or clear solutions for RL/credit assignment.
- Multi-agent Simulations: Simulated environments with multiple running participant agents, which the author and others are currently exploring.
