Gary Marcus Reaffirms: OpenAI Accelerates Surveillance Capitalism, Humanity Needs a Different AI Approach
GaryMarcus · x · 2026-08-21
Gary Marcus retweeted his old post, commenting that his previous assessment was "exactly right." He reiterated his criticisms of OpenAI:
- Accelerating surveillance capitalism: Hoovering up personal data via Microsoft products to fuel microtargeted ads.
- Open source & copyright issues: Misleading the public about its interest in open-source for years and leveraging artists' and writers' work without compensation or consent.
- Safety & ethical flaws: The software is unable to fact-check its work and appears to generate covertly racist outputs.
Marcus argues that humanity's best shot may lie in an entirely different approach to AI.
