VC on DeepSeek's open-sourced harness: generic agent layers will commoditize
mattsheehan88 · x · 2026-08-21
Investor Jenny Xiao tried DeepSeek's newly open-sourced agent harness: it has the expected ingredients (context management, tools, memory, subagents, agent loops) but still meaningfully trails the best closed-source harnesses.
She expects market bifurcation: generic model harnesses will likely commoditize — if your job is extracting model performance via context management, compaction, tool calling, or memory, you're competing with both model labs and open source, and today's differentiation becomes table stakes. She's increasingly bullish on environment-specific harnesses, whose job isn't making the model smarter but fitting agents into specific environments.
