AI boosts grades but hinders learning: Exam scores drop after AI ban
Limor_Raviv · x · 2026-08-21
A professor observed that in his Intro Psych class, the average score for open-book exams jumped from 85% to 95% after students started using AI. However, when he switched to an in-person cumulative exam without AI access, the average plummeted to 68%. This mirrors new research findings: while AI helps people finish work faster and get higher grades, it leads to less actual learning and poor performance on real exams, posing a serious problem for education.
