FLUX.1 Dev on a storage-capped box: use the fp8 single file, and CFG 1.0 is not optional

A user shared hands-on notes after a full day setting up FLUX.1 Dev on a rented RTX 5090:
fp8 single-file vs split setup
- Split fp16 totals 34GB (T5-XXL alone is 9.5GB); the Comfy-Org bundled fp8 checkpoint is 17.2GB — half the size
- If storage isn't tight, still prefer fp16 or GGUF Q6/Q8; fp8 quality loss is real but minor, mostly fine textures
CFG must be 1.0
- FLUX is a rectified-flow model with guidance distillation baked in; keeping SDXL-style CFG at 7–8 double-applies guidance it never expected, causing blown-out oversaturation
- At CFG 1.0 negative prompts barely matter
Workflow & cost
- Minimal no-custom-node pipeline: 1024×1024, 20 steps, euler/simple
- Rented 5090 (32GB VRAM) at $0.46/hr; total session under $1; 18s first gen, 8.5s after (2.46 it/s)
Bonus: huggingface-cli is deprecated — it now tells you to use hf instead.
