Yorkshire patients give up booking GP visits as AI receptionist fails to grasp accents
nordicinst · x · 2026-08-20
Per The Guardian, GP surgeries in South Yorkshire have adopted an AI receptionist called Emma to answer every call instantly and eliminate hold queues. But local health watchdog Healthwatch Rotherham has received complaints that the system fails to understand broad Yorkshire accents. One patient said, "I could never get it to understand me, I ended up just hanging up and not bothering to book an appointment." The watchdog's manager noted accent variation across the region causes inconsistent performance, though Emma still has potential.
