OpenAI's Codex Hits 20M Users as Revenue Run Rate Climbs 35% Quarter-to-Date

CNBC's Kate Rooney reports OpenAI's Codex has reached 20 million users, up from 15 million just about a week ago. OpenAI's Thibault Sottiaux had teased an "even more impressive" number coming by end of week, saying it still feels extremely early: ChatGPT has over a billion users, but the fraction using sophisticated agentic workflows remains small.
CFO Sarah Friar shared previously unreported revenue figures: OpenAI's quarter-to-date revenue run rate is up 35%, with enterprise up 50%, and Codex — the GPT side of the enterprise business — at 20 million. The momentum coincides with the summer launch of their newest model.
