China's Agentic Commerce: Two Paths Processing 120M Weekly Transactions
rvp · x · 2026-08-20
Richard Turrin highlights that China has launched two paths for agentic commerce, both already live, while the West is still debating protocols. Alibaba's model places AI on top of shopping, payments, travel, and maps to execute transactions directly rather than just recommending. ByteDance's model starts with content (video) to shape desire and converts within the same feed, where the agent that creates the desire also makes the purchase. Both converge on a point where the agent shops, pays, and fulfills without the user leaving the platform. China is reportedly processing 120 million AI payment transactions per week.
