Moderna/Merck's Personalized mRNA Cancer Vaccine Hits First-Ever Positive Phase 3
ChrisGPT · x · 2026-08-20
Moderna and Merck's individualized neoantigen therapy just got the first positive Phase 3 result ever for a personalized neoantigen therapy and an mRNA-based cancer treatment. The pipeline: sequence each patient's tumor, identify unique mutations, algorithmically select up to 34 neoantigens, then manufacture a personalized mRNA treatment teaching the patient's immune system to recognize their cancer, combined with Keytruda which takes the brakes off the immune response.
Evidence is much stronger than Phase 2: that study had only 157 patients but showed 49% lower risk of recurrence or death and 59% lower risk of distant metastasis/death at five years. Phase 3 tested 1,137 patients and still hit both recurrence-free survival and distant metastasis-free survival endpoints vs Keytruda alone; exact effect size not yet published.
