ChatGPT's free tier improved significantly this month. OpenAI switched free accounts to GPT-5.6 Luna on August 6 and removed the message cap entirely the following week. It offers unlimited text without a credit card. While Luna is the fast, cost-efficient tier of the 5.6 family and not the flagship reasoning model, it is real and free. Meanwhile, Claude's free tier runs Sonnet 5 instead of Opus 5, with usage resetting every 5 hours. It has no ads and no training opt-out disputes. Sonnet 5 alone outperforms last year's flagships.
