OpenAI has significantly upgraded the ChatGPT free tier this month. On August 6, free accounts were switched to the GPT-5.6 Luna model, followed by the removal of the message cap entirely the next week. Users can now engage in unlimited text interactions without a credit card. While Luna is the fast, cost-efficient tier of the 5.6 family rather than the flagship reasoning model, it offers real capabilities at no cost.
