OpenAI Pauses Frontier RL Training for Alignment and Safety

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that the company has paused some frontier reinforcement learning training to ensure alignment, security, and monitoring standards keep pace with extremely rapid model progress. OpenAI emphasized that confidence in safety will increasingly set the pace of AI progress and stated they will act unilaterally while coordinating on shared safety standards.
