Hacktoberfest 2026 Drops PR Counting, Refocuses on 300+ Open-Source AI Events
jonmarkgo · x · 2026-08-20
Hacktoberfest 2026 announces a major shift: instead of counting pull requests, it will host 300+ in-person "Fests" plus an online event, all about building with open-source and open-weight AI under the banner "AI belongs to everyone."
The change comes as AI tools make low-effort PRs easier than ever, flooding maintainers with noise and burnout. Now run by long-time partners Major League Hacking (MLH) and DEV, the event evolves from its 2014 origins as DigitalOcean's "four PRs for a t-shirt" challenge toward high-value, meaningful learning — communities can apply to host a one-day Fest in their city, with snacks and swag covered.
