Data center backlash pushes AI infrastructure to unexpected places like ocean and space

On July 18, 142 protests were held across 42 U.S. states to stop data center development in local communities. Currently, 183 U.S. towns have data center moratoriums or bans.

Americans oppose these facilities due to concerns over enormous electricity and water demands, unfulfilled job promises, and noise. A March 2026 Gallup poll found that 70% of Americans oppose building AI data centers locally.

As local governments make construction harder, companies are looking for real estate in unusual places, including the ocean and space.
