Is the modality gap a bug or a feature? Insights from high-dimensional space
gabriberton · x · 2026-08-19
Discusses the potential value of the modality gap. While 'Mind the Gap' found closing it improves zero-shot classification, the author suggests the gap might be a feature in some cases. Given the high-dimensional space (1000 dims), the gap might exist in only one dimension. Whether to preserve this gap for better retrieval remains an open question.
