Animation showcases Tilted ERM for robustness from ICLR 2021
abeirami · x · 2026-08-19
This post shares an animation for Tilted Empirical Risk Minimization (TERM), featured in an ICLR 2021 paper. TERM extends the ERM framework by using exponential tilting to flexibly tune the impact of individual losses. It enables fairness or robustness by adjusting outlier influence, offers variance-reduction benefits for generalization, and acts as a smooth approximation to loss tail probabilities.
