In an interview with Steven Bartlett, physicist Brian Greene expressed optimism about AI consciousness. He views consciousness as a physical process and sees no fundamental barrier to achieving it in artificial systems, expressing high confidence that AI can become conscious. Regarding legal rights, he noted we should start thinking now about the ethical difference between pulling the plug on a sentient system versus a lightbulb.
