Recursive self-improvement debate: the last 0.0001% is what matters

Continuing the debate on automating AI research: one side claims the process is already '99.9999% automated' and something amazing will happen once the last 0.0001% is solved. @ketanrama pushes back: such mechanical measures cut out exactly why human researchers are paid big bucks. Researchers are paid for that remaining 0.0001%, and in five years the remaining 0.00001% will matter even more given their leverage.
