Brex data: over half of the fastest-growing startups sell AI infra, not AI products
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-08-19
Brex published its summer ranking of the 25 fastest-growing software vendors, based on card and bill-pay activity from tens of thousands of customers, showing the infrastructure layer of the agent economy booming:
- 14 of the 25 sell infrastructure for building AI products (databases, GPUs, caches, sandboxes) rather than AI products themselves; six more are AI products built on those stacks
- #1 is Together AI, which rents access to open models
- The last time the list looked like this, the products on top were mobile apps and the infra was AWS; today the fastest-growing line items on startup statements are the plumbing of the agent economy
- The report digs into AI compute and databases, answering questions nobody outside the vendors can measure: when startups start running open models, whether open compute replaces or grows alongside Big Lab bills, and what happens in the 90 days after a founder prompts an app into existence
- List rules: publicly traded, >$30B valuation, or >$1B ARR companies graduate off
