Korea's $400M sovereign AI model pick sparks backlash as top scorer Motif is eliminated
teortaxesTex · x · 2026-08-19
A $400M government AI grant in Korea is drawing backlash: in the national "Sovereign Foundation Model" initiative, Motif — the highest-performing homegrown model with a score of 47 — was eliminated, while lower scorers Upstage (37), LG (35) and SK (31) all advanced.
The tech community is raising red flags about corruption and demanding the government explain how selection actually worked. With national AI competitiveness at stake, the evaluation process must be fully transparent.
