Open models aren't replacing closed ones; startups now run both tracks: complex reasoning and customer-facing conversations stay on closed APIs, while classification, extraction, transcription and generation shift to open models that are 5–20x cheaper.
Notably, 98% of open-compute buyers still pay OpenAI or Anthropic — open models work as cost optimization, not replacement.
